Founding City Spotlight: Creedmoor, North Carolina

The City of Creedmoor is proud to be designated as “Playful City USA” community for the 6th consecutive year! The City's focus on play has increased greatly as a result of our participation in Playful City USA. The funds allocated for recreation have increased in our budget planning compared to years prior to our designation. Creedmoor has become invested in the guiding principles of Playful City USA and has made numerous efforts to address the Play Deficit in our community. This past year the City pursued and received county recreation programming funds which allow the City to dedicate funds specifically for the purpose of increasing play opportunities.

The City of Creedmoor recently completed a planning project which included the creation of long range plans for pedestrian and bicycle safety, facility needs, and identification of linear parks and greenways. Last year we purchased a piece of property that was sold due to unpaid taxes.  The City’s goal is to re-vitalize this property, which is in an older, disadvantaged community, and to help reduce crime through increased law enforcement measures, and build a community park. We are also in discussions with the local school board to collaborate on a joint use agreement and partnerships. One agreement is already in place, through the dedication of easement along school property. The easement is part of a grant project that will fund the construction of a new sidewalk connecting the elementary and high schools to the downtown district and multiple play spaces in the eastern side of the City. The objective is to provide for safe access for children from the schools to recreation and play spaces, as well as residential and commercial districts.

Our City has focused on increasing play opportunities in our community through the development of new policies and partnerships, engaging citizens in actively building/renovating play spaces, increased public education, establishing a Budget for Play spaces, and the creation of an action plan for play space in the City. The City is currently focusing on the delivery of recreational services and how to change or create policies to support the implementation of a new Parks and Recreation Department.
